updates
Hi,
I have been using BaseElements for quite some time and I am very happy with it. I appreciate the updates.
However, every time there is an update I spend quite some time trying to remember and find how to import my old data. First I look through the setup etc. because I remember that I did an import but can't remember where it was. Then I go to your site and after a couple false starts I find that the import script is in the Data file (which I never look at because it is always hidden).
This is just a suggestion but I think it would make updating much easier and less annoying if there was a button in setup or at least instructions in the setup or preferences explaining where to perform the import. Actually, instructions in Setup seem like a bad idea when there could just be an import button there.
My 2 cents.
Thanks.

Thomas,
I actually used to have a button there, but I removed it. Essentially I don't want the import from previous to be a commonly used feature ( I know that sounds odd, but there's a logical reason to it.)
Essentially I'm almost always making changes to the data structure, which although mostly minor, might mean that the data imported from a previous version is missing something that the current version requires.
In version 2 I attempted to track the changes and found that 90% of the time I was recommending a re-import from the DDR because of changes to the data structure. So without having a very documented process and changes at each new update for what may or may not have altered between updates I had a feature there that I couldn't recommend to most users.
In the end I decided I'd attempt to document these concerns in the manual and make the import from previous less obvious. So it was still there but not as obvious so people were more likely to import from the DDR or just retain the old files for reference.
I hope this makes sense, but you aren't the first to ask about this, so I may re-consider.
Cheers,
Nick
